I was not a Kobe fan, at all. But to address Brian’s point, I don’t think the reaction he’s getting is unique. If Ben Roethlisberger or Bill Clinton or [insert famous rockstar here] died unexpectedly tomorrow I think you’d see a similar outpouring of admiration and grief. That doesn’t mean that celebrities’ transgressions should be ignored — just that the public reaction here is not surprising.

I also tend to believe in second chances and don’t think Kobe was ever accused of anything other than being a difficult teammate post-2003.

Plenty of women have been praising and mourning Kobe today do you can’t just attribute the reaction to gender biases. Just a few examples:
