CLASSIC CONFEDERATIONS CUP. ESPN Classic will air on Friday all U.S. national team games for the 2009 Confederations Cup, where it finished second.
Coverage will include USA-Egypt (noon ET), USA-Spain (2 pm ET) and the USA-Brazil final (4 pm ET).
After losing its first two group games against Italy and Brazil, the USA went into its last game against Egypt needing a big win and lots of help to have any chance of advancing. A 3-0 victory over Egypt and Brazil’s defeat of Italy by the same score edged the Americans into the semifinals on goal difference.
Spain was riding a 35-match unbeaten streak heading into the match, yet the Americans parlayed goals by Jozy Altidore and Clint Dempsey plus some stout defending to prevail, 2-0. In the final goals by Dempsey and Landon Donovan staked the Americans to a 2-0 lead but Brazil rallied to win, 3-2.
Dempsey finished tied for second in scoring with three goals, and keeper Tim Howard won the adidas Golden Glove award. The second-place finish is the highest ever attained by a U.S. men’s team in a major FIFA tournament.

The 2nd goal against Brazil is still the greatest counter-attacking goal I've ever seen.
They took the ball 100 yards in 5 touches.

Yeah, that makes me miss Charlie Davies.
The goal against Algeria went Howard-> Donovan -> Altidore ->shot by Dempsey ->Goal by Donovan.
9 seconds from literally one goal to another. (Howard saved a header standing pretty much in the goal and launched that massive outlet to LD.)
Fuck it. I'm watching the reactions montage again.

Yeah! Still give me goose bumps and makes me tear up. Greatest sports moment of my life.
Speaking of Charlie Davies, any chance he ever makes it back to the USMNT, or did he loose too much off his game after the accident?

this was during finals, and in our department office that shares a wall with a science classroom wherein students were taking their exam, we set up a projector and watched this play unfold as we were supposed to grading. The Sybian wrote:Nonlinear FC wrote:

when landon put it home, we couldn't tell who was lounder: the 8 teachers in our office, or the 25 students who were supposed to be taking their final.

Spain and Uruguay was nearly unwatchable with the flopping and melodramatic behavior. However, Suarez's goal was gorgeous.

If FIFA was not so corrupt I would say they should move to the MLS model of post match review and penalization.

For some reason Italy always seems to be able to score, they just don't choose to play that way a lot of the time, I guess feeling like it's in their genes to play like the old School Italy squads.
And for what it's worth, I don't think the first Japan goal was a penalty.

So Spain set some history today. They're the largest favorite ever in the 35-year history of the LVH (formerly LV Hilton) sportsbook.
You'd have to bet $500 to win $1 on Spain today (or $1 to win $400 on Tahiti).

1-0 Spain in the 13th minute (Torres, 5th minute).
One could argue Tahiti could have a penalty kick, but the Tahitian player went down kind of easy.

Re: Confederations Cup 2013
Gotta give Tahiti props. They're playing to win.
It should be 3-0, but Torres has missed two easy passes to a wide-open David Villa.
And now it's 2-0 on a David Silva goal in the 32nd minute.
