And I thought it was an environmental thing.

Holy shit, it's so much more.

Now how the hell do you provide enough electric stoves for everyone everywhere?

Probably not a coincidence, but starting this past fall my asthma would kick in when the gas-powered fireplace was on. I’ve needed to hit my inhaler considerably more than any time in my adult life.

Well, fuck.

My wife's had an annoying cough develop over the past couple years. I had a gas stove installed about 5 years ago.

Since we are dealing with anecdotal, what is the incidence of asthma in your household?

Zero. Only person I know of with asthma is my uncle and he lives in North Carolina.

We had a gas stove in our old house, and when we moved to the new house, they had disconnected the gas for the stove and installed an electric cooktop. Knowing that the first thing we were redoing when moving in was the kitchen and that the gas was still hooked up to the house (for the hot water heater), we knew we were hooking the gas back up. My wife hated cooking on the electric for the five months before we got it redone. There was no way we weren't going back. We even found an apartment when we first lived together that had a gas stove, which is pretty rare around here.

Desi Lydic did a report on the Daily Show sometime last year about the effects of gas in the house, but I can't seem to find it on the YouTubes.

Oh, and there's no one with asthma in the house.

Also at zero, in my family growing up and here in my grown up me family. Not disputing just anecdote-ing.

I guess this isn’t really happening as fast as it seems but I had honestly missed any hint of this before seeing a tweet earlier. Then the swamp and now the 11 o’clock news!

I’ve always preferred a gas stove, because it’s so much easier to regulate the heat on your stove. Might want to re-think that.

According to GE:
Starting in 2018, UL (Underwriter's Laboratory) regulations require all electric coil top ranges to have temperature limiting capabilities to reduce the risk of cooktop oil and grease fires. As a result, our electric coil burners now use Sensi-Temp Technology.
2018 seems pretty late in the game to incorporate failsafes in electric ranges to prevent fire.

I’ve cooked on my parents Samsung electric range (which I presume has its own brand of tech to meet that UL-required specification), and I never had problems with heat (cast iron cookware).

Gas and terrible asthma. We used to use the thing as a heater. Not good likely. On the plus side we had holes in the kitchen windows so some ventilation. No actual fan and exit venting though.

I did start a grease fire on the electric stove at the apartment we lived in last year. I did also man up and carry the flaming pan down three flights of stairs. Kid was impressed. He ran.

I'm in this camp. I hate electric stovetops. First house we bought, the neighborhood didn't have gas lines, so we had to go electric. Just stayed there for a couple years and wouldn't consider houses without gas hookups after that.

I never thought about the potential health risk, because gas stoves are so prevalent, but in hindsight, of course it can't be healthy to stand over an open flame inside your house.

Maybe it's because we have a relatively new electric range, but I don't really think there's that much of an issue regulating heat on the darn thing. The "dial" is pretty clear with low-med-high heat and, yeah, maybe it takes a little bit to understand the nuances or whatever, but...

Maybe folks are talking about the old coil ones being bad?

our house came with an extremely expensive gas stove and I don't have any desire to change it out -- I guess i'll just always use the ventilation system instead of just when necessary

Gas stoves at both our houses with kids. 1 with asthma, one without. The one with asthma though is more triggered by environmental issues, rather than it being a day-to-day problem, especially the dry winter grass that he played soccer on when we lived in AZ.

I'm waiting on the investigation into the weaponization of the EPA with their low flow toilet requirements preventing Trump from flushing documents down the toilet.

Yeah, the only electric stoves I've used were probably made in the 1970s. Maybe I'd be happy with the newer ones, especially the induction stoves. But there is just something so satisfying about cooking over an open flame and turning a dial to control the height of the flame.

I know, but I didn't want to think about how else that could be seen as an attack on only Conservatives. Mentioning Limbaugh and toilet issues in the same sentence made me nauseous.

I am totally unconcerned about asthma from our gas stove.

Mostly because the air is so terrible in Salt Lake City that we already have some of the worst asthma problems in the country.
And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.
