Baseball somewhat trivia-ish question
Hey dougs, somebody on Facebook mentioned that one game before the break, the Nationals had a lineup with 6 first round picks (5 position players + pitcher). I wondered just how unusual that was...apparently, très unusual.
I can think of a potential Pirates lineup, when Tony Sanchez comes up in September, that has 6 (Walker, Snider, McCutchen, Sanchez, Alvarez, pitcher). Can't really think of any others...most I got in a Yankees lineup was 5. Anybody's team have a 6-first rounder lineup?

I have no idea where any baseball players were drafted.

Yeah, most people don't, so I had to reach out to like the entire swamp here.
EDIT: Anyway, you're a Yanks fan, so the answer for most of your players is "by other teams".

Ah, so a line-up including a team's own first-rounders then? That may be the most difficult trivia-ish question ever posed here.Icepenis wrote:Hey dougs, somebody on Facebook mentioned that one game before the break, the Nationals had a lineup with 6 first round picks (5 position players + pitcher). I'll save anyone else the trouble of clicking through the BlueJays draft history on Baseball-Reference as the most I can vaguely assemble for that team is three. Possible four but it's a stretch.
I would have guessed a late 1970s or early 1980s Expos team (think of guys like Dawson, Cromartie, Valentine, Carter, etc) but most of that team were, surprisingly, late picks. Andre Dawson was an 11th round pick! Quite a steal, that, given that he's now in the HoF.

I can come up with 4 reds - Bruce, Mesoraco, Frazier, Bailey.
Votto and Cozsart were second rounders.

Doesn't have to be a team's own first rounders...for example, for the Yankees, I'm counting A-Rod.

Re: Baseball somewhat trivia-ish question
If it weren't for the DL, the Padres would just about be able to field an entire lineup.
Alonso (1b)
Quentin (lf)
Forsythe(2b)
Kotsay(Rf)
Marquis (Sp)
Grandal(c) and Maybin(cf) on DL. So just missing a shortstop and a 3b from a whole lineup of first rounders if everyone got healthy.
Some dude named Jaff Decker has two ABs, but isn't on ML roster right now.

Mike Leake was also a 1st rounder. Phillips also was a surprise 2nd rounder to me.AB_skin_test wrote:I can come up with 4 reds - Bruce, Mesoraco, Frazier, Bailey.

Re: Baseball somewhat trivia-ish question
I don't think they are allowing me to count pitchers in the AL, or else the Royals would meet the qualifications per Mr. Dick.
San Diego is another I wouldn't have thought of. Basically teams without Mexicans seem to be the way to go.

Hard to start two pitchers, though!Rams Fanny wrote:Mike Leake was also a 1st rounder. Phillips also was a surprise 2nd rounder to me.AB_skin_test wrote:I can come up with 4 reds - Bruce, Mesoraco, Frazier, Bailey.

Re: Baseball somewhat trivia-ish question
The Rays could make this exercise moot in the next few years, with their 10 first rounders in 2011 (if you include supplemental first round picks),
Until everything is less insane, I'm mixing weed with wine.
Re: Baseball somewhat trivia-ish question
Don't know if supplemental picks are included or not. Especially now that they can be traded.

Royals would have had...
Gordon (Royals)
Butler (Royals)
Hosmer (Royals)
Moustakas (Royals)
Hochevar (Royals)
Francouer (Braves)
and then Crow in the pen. But Francoeur be gone and Hoch be in the pen.

Re: Baseball somewhat trivia-ish question
I think the Mets regularly fill the lineup with 9 first rounders. They just don't work out.AB_skin_test wrote:If it weren't for the DL, the Padres would just about be able to field an entire lineup.

Re: Baseball somewhat trivia-ish question
Mostly a bunch of starting pitchers. Posey, Nick Noonan, Jeff Francouer who really should not count for purposes of this contest, and pick one: Timmay, Cain, Baumgartner, Zach Wheeler. Oh wait, fuck! (Beltran was a 2nd round pick)
Who knows? Maybe, you were kidnapped, tied up, taken away and held for ransom.

Francouer counts just fine for this. Someone posted the factoid about the Nationals, I said "is this really all that uncommon?", they said yes, and I was like, damn, maybe it is.

Only after he contributes more runs to this team than Nick Noonan. If.

Re: Baseball somewhat trivia-ish question
I'm glad you asked the question though because from Baseball Reference I learned Justin Verlander is only 0.9 WAR behind Lance Parrish for the best career WAR for a Tigers first-rounder (he actually just passed Kirk Gibson - 38.3 to 38.2. Might be one of those days where I spend a few hours clicking through link through link down the rabbit hole on that site.
