Vandoliers singer comes out as trans

Post by brian »

Honestly deserves its own thread.

Pretty gutsy thing to do considering how much traction they’re getting. Hoping for the best for her (them?) especially in this fucked country. (The literal one and the genre).

“For 36 years, I’ve tried to be anything but a trans person”

I can't imagine how hard that is and hope the future is a zero-sum game where people like Jenni Rose win and those who made her feel that way lose.

Gonna be fun when the Trump admin decides they can't play music with cis guys anymore.

Even if we get to a point where society accepts and it’s not an issue, I’d imagine it’ll still be confusing for a kid to be told they are one gender and feel like another and figure out who they are. Just hope we can soon get to the point that the coming out part isn't difficult. Cautiously optimistic looking at how my kids friends discuss their friends coming out like they are describing the color of the hoodie they wore. Just yesterday, my daughter casually mentioned that two of her former teammates are dating. Rest of the team only cares because one girl is a bitch they don’t like and want the other to do better. I said I was surprised there aren’t any girls out on her current team. She casually rattled off three who are openly out. Just not an issue at all. I do realize I’m in suburban Northeast, but still.

Yeah, I use where I live as kind of a benchmark for where wider progress could go. There will be shitheads who are against (see: racism), but once you've crossed the threshold where the majority are on the right side, things can be so much better. Here if a kid is gay or bi or non-binary, it barely registers, in a good way. They're just allowed to see who they are, even if its not permanent.

We talked about it a lot this morning while driving back towards home from west of DFW area. I’m so happy for her to finally be able to live as her true self. Very brave to do it in this day and age, but if there ever was band who wouldn’t give a shit about how something like this would affect their trajectory, it’s Vandoliers.

We explained to the youngest what it all means and a) she understood it completely and b) apologized for misgendering and misnaming Jenni a couple times. I love raising empathetic and compassionate kids.

B is the most important part ... even if you don't understand it and constantly misspeak, caring enough to try to get it right is like the whole point for people like us. Good on you for raising a kid who cares.

Thanks man. And same to you.

I think I told the story about meeting Adeem the Artist last year. I knew there was a good chance I would given the venue and what not, so I had to keep reminding myself to not use masculine pronouns if I did. Sure enough, they commented on my American Aquarium shirt and after a short convo I blurt out “have a good show man!” I was horrified and went outside. Adeem and the opener came out which gave me a chance to apologize. They basically said “it means a lot that you care.” Then we smoked a joint together.

Good story, Giff. All the best to the Vandoliers, and her especially. I know it’ll be a hard road, especially being a Dallas-based band. Probably going to see them in July.

Also wanted to echo the thoughts that it just isn’t an issue for many kids, nowadays. One of Nora’s best friends is trans. Was friends before, still friends now, and never gives it a second thought.

Nice that not everything in the country is going to hell.

I don’t think the Dallas part matters much though they’ve historically played a lot of shows in more rural parts of Texas. But bigotry is everywhere. Cory and Travis almost got into a scrap with an asshole at the Tahoe show I went to.

Going to a concert tonight and would have worn my Vandoliers shirt if I had any idea this was coming but left it in the truck.

(I did get a “nice shirt” when I was wearing it walking around Deep Ellum a couple weeks ago.)

Crazy you were at that show. They discussed it a bit on their podcast and AB and I met the dude the slurs were thrown towards when we saw American Aquarium at the Ryman.

I only knew about bc of the podcast. Didn’t see any of it personally. They shit on the venue (deservedly from what they describe) but the truth is that I’ve never had an issue with the staff there.
