MLB 2014 - AUGUST

Post by sancarlos »

So, Paul Goldschmidt had his hand accidentally broken by a Pirate pitch, and in retaliation, now per twitter update, Andrew McCutchen now has a fractured rib. Sheesh.

Not sure why no American League team claimed him. $4 mil for the next 2 years for a serviceable bullpen guy seems like a good deal. Tigers, Angels or another team with bullpen struggles couldn't use him? I though teams were swimming in cash now.

His job is to kill lefties and they're OBPing over .300 against him. Not horrible, but no reason to commit either.

David Price looks good sporting an Olde English D.

(I mean he literally looks good after a career of wearing clown clothes to be wearing a real major league uniform. Hopefully the pitching matches the duds.)

Agreed. Sometimes he was throwing the ball hard and I was like "c'mon, man, just throw the ball like a normal person but don't hurt your arm or something" and those 10 SO were super inefficient. Tampa Bay got a steal.

Senseless. There should be huge fines and suspensions. Not just for the jerk pitcher, but also for the people that gave the call.

Agreed. But the real test will be when Price faces a strong lineup. Perhaps Tampa Bay, with Adames and Franklin in the 2 and 3 slots.

Totally. Although I guess its nice to know that Gibson is probably burying his second (non All-Star level) career with all of this.

LaRussa just blamed the Pirates for pitching inside. I have a bad habit of reading replies to Keith Law tweets. Based on Diamondback fan replies, I now believe Arizona should not have a baseball team nor representation in Congress.

I was a bit surprised LaRussa would say that, until I remembered that LaRussa is now employed by the Diamondbacks.

They're not in the top 8 or 9 stupidest uniforms and that's saying something considering those late 00's unis.

Plus, Price didn't come up until '08, so he was never in a clown uniform, unless you don't like some of the one off throwback stuff they've done in recent years. TAKE IT ALL BACK!

Drew Smyly was totally dominant tonight. Franklin and Adames probably were too.

David Price did nothing at all for the Tigers.

It kinda pains me to see Verlander be a shell of his former self. He gonna pull a Lincecum in the playoffs?

It was Smyly's off-day, too. He gave up 3 earned in 5.1 on Tuesday.

Smyly is now dead to me, so I didn't realize that.

Shell is a bit much. His stats are lousy. But Verlander has been a lot better in the past month than in the first three.

He can't dial it up to 97+ like he could a couple years ago. But he can throw 92 to 94, and he's got good off-speed pitches. He can be very effective if he has command. He's smart, motivated, and works on his game. I don't think he's going to coast on his massive contract. Way too soon to write him off.

Further, Verlander is coming off some kind of core surgery last winter. So he may be better next year simply because he's had enough time to get in excellent condition with a full off-season to get the work in.

Verlander's swinging strike rate (relative to league):
2011: 10.2% (+20.0%)
2012: 11.7% (+36.0%)
2013: 10.5% (+15.4%)
2014: 8.6% (-7.5%)

Also, Verlander is 31.5 and he's thrown a lot of innings. He leads the 1983 birth class in innings by 100 (Greinke) and would lead the 1982 class by the same gap (Santana). 1981, only Peavy and Carlos Zambrano have more. Only Felix is a bigger outlier.

Verlander's season stats are poor. But consistent with the theory that he's recovering after a bad start due to having surgery last winter, below are some stats in the past 28 days. That's not vintage Verlander. But it's a sign of improvement.

3.60 ERA
1.11 WHIP
.660 OPS against

By way of contrast, here are David Price's season stats.

3.11 ERA
1.04 WHIP
.652 OPS against

Guess who has a .244 BABIP over the last 30 days (.304 overall) despite his SO% actually dropping below his season average.

Smyly's been good. But that good?

I looked up Price, but he's got just a .276 BABIP in the past 28 days.

If the argument is that Detroit would be better served long term having attached Verlander's contract rather than Smyly in the Price trade, I'm not going to oppose you.

(Its Verlander. I'm saying his improved-but-not-good ERA and low WHIP are more output blip than input improvement.)
