NFL Preseason Football Thread 2014 (Because we can!)

HoF game doesn't count for these purposes.

Let the battle for back-up positions and avoiding injuries begin!*

*I am not one of those who hates the pre-season games - in all of the attempts to limit it to two games, I always wonder how the back of the roster can really be evaluated.

Bills' season ticket holders can rent, excuse me... "lease"... padded seat cushions.

https://www.seatbacks.com/main.aspx?school=billsseats

Only $50 for the season!

I guess the $150 million renovation of the stadium didn't include more comfortable seats.

Apparently, seat cushions had been banned (for security reasons?!) but the league will now allow fans in Buffalo to carry in

Johnny Football Era starts in the D on Saturday for the Great Lakes Classic. (What's that you say? You're jealous your favorite NFL team doesn't have a preseason traveling trophy?)

I just wish the players would run across the field to grab the trophy when winning it from the other team like they do in college. Even just once as a goof.

ETA: (It would be even funnier to me since most of the guys running across to grab it are going to be baggage handlers and stockbrokers (or if they're REALLY lucky, arena football player, a few weeks after the game.)

Officials seem to be serious about cracking down on illegal contact penalties (which I am 100 percent in favor of) judging from all of the calls in Week 1. I'll be curious to see if they swallow their whistles when the regular season starts. I know that's what the Seahawks and some of the teams whose defenses are almost completely built around illegal contact are hoping.

Man anytime Peyton is supposed to win the Super Bowl, and doesn't, do they really have to change the rules?

We bought new ones for last year that fit the new restrictions. Only had to argue with one sheriff and one gate attendant over whether they were kosher. Used to be able to smuggle a can of beer in my old one. Drunkest fans in the league!!!

I'm still trying to figure out what the traffic violation was. I think the reason the cop cuffed his is because the car was filled with pot smoke. You just can't be driving around while smoking a joint. I don't think the cop was aggressive or out of line in this video.

He had a joint, which hadn't been discovered yet, and the cuffs went on immediately after whatever that traffic violation was.

I've never seen a guy who smells like alcohol cuffed immediately.

I thought I read that there was smoke in the car. You can measure somebodies BAC and prove they were drunk driving, but it's difficult to prove DUI for pot. Plus, pot is still illegal, so it's different than alcohol. If there wasn't smoke in the car, I'll concede this point.

It wasn't the weed. It was his scary buff body! Apparently being physically fit is just cause to put on the cuffs.

This is a good refresher course. Must remember to drop the top to expel the smoke before pulling over. Also, do not flex.

Question: Don't kids these days know to toss the weed out the window when they see the lights flashing? I thought that was always a fundamental move. But perhaps today's youth are more environmentally conscious.

Either that or eat it.

Along those lines, the substance/PED suspensions seem to be helping the Pats. They've got a couple of spots where theyre pretty deep and would have to cut some decent players (WR, CB) and they don't have to bother with Tyms or Browner on the 53 so long as theyre suspended. Between that and Belichick's (over)use of PUP maybe they'll find a way to get to 56-57 guys avoiding waivers.

I have just watched an NFL.com video with an ex player/presenter saying that what Manziel did was much worse than Jimmy Graham's double dunk and then called out the commish to give Manziel a bigger fine (Graham got a $33,000 fine).

"That is ridiculous, its not good for the badge, for our shield, its not good for kids watching, its not good across the board"

A rule was brought in during the off season following Jimmy Graham's celebration dunks to ban dunking a football over the posts. This was basically because Graham's actions held up a televised NFL game by over 20 minutes last season, because he broke the fecking posts.

Graham's response to this rule was to dunk a ball on each of his two touchdowns during the Saints game this week. He did this despite getting balled out by his head coach following the first dunk and then telling the media after the game, it is what it is and I'll get a fine...

It is likely that both guys are wankers (young sporting millionaires are likely to be), but I am sure that much worse things are said in the huddle, on the pitch and done at the bottom of a pile.

Edit: had "Offensive" in there, but Johnny didn't do anything resembling offense.

In other news, the sun came up this morning.

But ESPN has their new Tebow, and they are going to make a competition between a career backup and a late first round pick into an epic QB battle.

I think Gruden nailed it when he said that they need to pick one and let that guy get all the first team reps to try to establish some kind of rhythm. I don't think Hoyer looked good either, but I do think he's more prepared to be a starting QB in the NFL right now. The part where Gruden asked Manziel to call off a play was hard to watch.

And another guy who I think can be a good QB is Kirk Cousins...that guy looks like he could be a leader. He's just stuck in a bad spot.
