Swamp Album Draft: Current Pick - BFJ (329th) + SKIP J-LO (324/325th)

Re: Swamp Album Draft: Current Pick ***2-17 PDX***
Lay-up. Many a college night spent swilling beers and shooting pool while this spun. I'd argue that 8 of the songs on this album are so good that we can overlook the blight of Going Mobile (mobile, mobile, mobile...).

I was ready to pick Who’s Next with my last pick, but I looked at the track list and realized that I would never want to hear most of those songs anymore. I love The Who, but I’m not sure that album would get much airplay in the cabin. I’d be opting for Jimi over Pete.
I like Going Mobile. Hee hoo. Beep beep.

That'd be my Who choice - although in typical Who fashion, there are now like 5 versions of that album.sancarlos wrote: ↑Mon Feb 12, 2018 8:31 pmI like Live at Leeds way more than any other of their albums.bfj wrote: ↑Mon Feb 12, 2018 7:55 pm I was ready to pick Who’s Next with my last pick, but I looked at the track list and realized that I would never want to hear most of those songs anymore. I challenge anyone to find another Who LP that starts stronger than The Who by Numbers (Slip Kid, However Much I Booze & Squeeze Box)..
Now the walls are all clawed and scratched
Like by some soul insane
In the morning I humbly detach myself
I take no blame
I just can't face my failure
I'm nothing but a well fucked sailor
You at home can easily decide what's right
By glancing very briefly at the songs I write
But it don't help me that you know
This ain't no way out
Won't somebody tell me?
I don't care what you say, boy
There ain't no way out

Re: Swamp Album Draft: Current Pick ***2-12 SANCARLOS***
My, but the court is busy
When I first saw the query, I thought, shit this is gonna be a tough call. But it is pretty easy. As I mentioned above, somehow I thought there was some cross-pollination between Wilco and Son Volt, but apparently not much. While more members of Tupelo went to Wilco, two of the three original Tupelos went to Volt. And it is not reasonable to consider Tupelo as 'Tweedy's band' or 'Farrar's band'.
Ruling:
Uncle Tupelo is a thing; sancarlos pick at Round 2 Pick 12 takes the four studio albums off the board, as well as any compilations/demos. Also a thing is Wilco/any solo Tweedy stuff (I think there is one solo album). As is Volt/Farrar solo records. Three separate things. The latter two are available for selection
Ruling:
Gonna consider Hüsker Dü a Bob Mould band, and belong with the Round 2 Pick 11 choice of Dave in Seattle, along with the Mould/Sugar pick. This is really arbitrary, bordering on capricious. Life isn't fair. Mostly to reward the excellent, inspired selection. If someone had Zen Arcade or Flip your Wig on your draft board, well the court just fucked you, cuz they and the rest of the Hüsker Dü output belongs to Dave.
Did Tweedy and Farrar really fucking hate each other? Or had drastically different visions? Was it over a girl/was there a Yoko? Or it just worked out for the best for Tweedy to go his way, and Farrar continue with some of the other Tupelo boys?

This is a little tougher. Clearly Sugar is a Bob Mould band, so your selection includes his solo work plus the four Sugar studio albums. The court is conflicted in considering Hüsker Dü a band dominated by Mould, or is Grant Hart's lesser role significant enough to consider the band separately. That driving 4/4 beat. The Girl Who Lives On Heaven Hill, a Hart composition, my fav Dü tune, and one of the few songs I have been allowed to sing onstage (since the lyrics are best screamed, and that is about all I can manage vocally to an acceptable degree of competence.) OTOH, the court is of the opinion that Hart's solo stuff, well, kinda sucks, and his Dü songs were as a whole weaker that Mould's. But they wrote many songs together.DaveInSeattle wrote: ↑Mon Feb 12, 2018 10:16 am I'll leave it to the Draft Overseer Howard to rule on whether this also takes Husker Du off the board.

Take all the words I've written in this thread, with these posturing pseudo-legal proclamations. Multiply by about 27. That is roughly how many words I could spontaneously spew forth in consideration of this single LP, Who's Next. My Wife by far my favorite song. But I love Going Mobile, and everything else. I wrote out the lyrics to each song. I taught myself barre chords on a roommate's guitar to these songs. I've listened to Keith's track on My Wife over and over, and I can still hear something new. I'll spare you my other thousands of thoughts on this album, but man do I love it.Gimme police protection

Re: Swamp Album Draft: Current Pick ***2-18 J-LO for 2***
I mean, it means very little to me, because for whatever reason I never sank my teeth into Husker Du, so I really know Mould as a stand alone artist.
That ignorance also extends to the Wilco/Tupelo/Sun Volt issue. I just wasn't that into 2 of these 3 and was not curious enough to extend past one of them to be aware of the connections.
So, I'm not gonna argue the Mould thing, especially because if you WERE into Husker Du, you'd undoubtedly not be ignorant on the Mould thing.

Hey fuck you guys. And Carole King. I'll take the river down to still water and ride a pack of dogs.
(I honestly didn't know until now that this came out the same day as Nevermind. What a great era for music. Also, you guys remember when albums were only released on Tuesdays and you'd always be in the know about what was coming out that week?)

I was holding my tongue on the Carole King choice, perhaps because the choice reminded me of my late mother - she loved that album too. Striesand is still available if somebody wants to complete the tribute to her record collection.P.D.X. wrote: ↑Tue Feb 13, 2018 3:25 pm Hey fuck you guys. And Carole King. The first perfect album selected in this draft.

Re: Swamp Album Draft: Current Pick ***3-4 CHEDDA***
I’ve got my classic rock represented, I’ve got my louder, grungier, angrier music represented. Now it’s time to mellow it out a bit with some jazz. This was the first Coltrane album I was introduced to and it is a great record. McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones accompany Coltrane on this and it is just so good.
