When I just saw Lynn's comments and not TLR's response, I said there's a chance he doesn't survive this. I'm upping those odds.

It's May 19th and they are hitting .199 as a team. They've also been no-hit four times in 170 games, which should basically be impossible.

You expect the same people stupid enough to hire him will know the right time to fire him?
I'm guessing ownership is high fiving him for showing who's the boss.

We talking about the White Sox.

I don't think they follow the same people on Twitter that we do, so they may be oblivious to the embarrassment or just thinks it's whining by uppity players and nerdy writers who haven't played the game.

"Reinsdorf was born to a Jewish family in Brooklyn, New York.[3][4] He attended Erasmus Hall High School in Brooklyn,[5] and he was the son of a sewing machine salesman.[6] A lifelong baseball fan who grew up in the shadows of Ebbets Field,[7] Reinsdorf was in the stands the day Jackie Robinson debuted for the Brooklyn Dodgers, “breaking the color barrier” as the first Black player permitted by white ownership.[8]
Reinsdorf earned a bachelor's degree from George Washington University in Washington, D.C.[9] where he became a member of Alpha Epsilon Pi.[10] He subsequently moved to Chicago in 1957.[9] Reinsdorf became a CPA and lawyer[11] as well as a registered mortgage underwriter and a certified review appraiser.[9][12] He leveraged a full scholarship offer from the University of Chicago Law School into a scholarship from the Northwestern University School of Law.[7] His first job after graduating from Northwestern in 1960 was a tax delinquency case of Bill Veeck who at the time owned the White Sox.[6] In 1964, Reinsdorf went into private practice. He developed a specialty in real estate partnership tax shelters. He sold his business interests in the real estate partnership in 1973 and formed Balcor, which raised US$650 million to invest in buildings under construction. He sold Balcor in 1982 for $102 million to Shearson Lehman Brothers, the investment banking and brokerage arm of American Express.[6] However, he continued to be President of the company for several years thereafter"
Seems like a not nerdy guy to me.
Hold on, I'm trying to see if Jack London ever gets this fire built or not.
Re: 2021 MLB Regular Season Thread
Whether or not a position player is pitching isn’t relevant, and people tend to cite unwritten rules of baseball when they feel said rule should be done away with. Swinging 3-0 when you’re up by a ridiculous amount of runs is a dick move. LaRussa attempted to emphasize that point, but he fucked it up.

Contracts are decided on stats, not unwritten rules. An extra HR, an extra bump in OPS. Fuck unwritten rules. Make a fucking pitch otherwise shut the fuck up.

Yeh. Powerful people like team owners and GMs are generally not youthful free thinkers. They’re apt to knee-jerk support TLR, and their circle of associates will harrumph, harrumph along with them.
As Enoch noted, there was a way for TLR to gracefully make his point, but instead, he went the bull-in-a-china-shop route.

Yeah, once the manager decides "I don't want to waste a pitchers arm on this crap" all bets are off. We celebrate it when Rizzo strikes out Freeman (or whichever way it was) but it's also pretty funny when a major league hitter gets to hit off a little leaguer, IMO.

The point is the Twins waved the white flag when they inserted a position player into the lineup. Swinging 3-0 is a dick move, and parking it in the seats could mean a 98 MPH heater into your back the next time you face one another.
All LaRussa had to do was bench Mercedes for a few games to send the message (and call Baldelli after the game). Instead, he blasted him via the media which not only vacates higher ground, it loses him the clubhouse.

Position players pitching are probably just having fun and not at all giving a shit about take counts.
And Ryan Lamarre just showed why you don’t bust your ass on routine groundouts just for that 1 in 200 shot.

What's the difference between swinging at 3-0 and 3-1, especially when the position player pitching is fucking around throwing meatballs every pitch? Hell if everyone gave up, should they just swing and miss on purpose for the rest of the game and go out for ice cream.EnochRoot wrote: ↑Wed May 19, 2021 7:14 pmThat’s a strawman.A_B wrote: ↑Wed May 19, 2021 5:40 pmYeah, once the manager decides "I don't want to waste a pitchers arm on this crap" all bets are off. Forget no hitters; we have managers throwing bases. Wonder if Joe Torre is in the stands for this one.
Re: 2021 MLB Regular Season Thread
Six no-hitters this year, against only three teams: Texas, Detroit and Cleveland.

The league batting average is currently .237. The last time it was this low they lowered the mound.

Re: 2021 MLB Regular Season Thread
The game is a joke once a position player starts pitching and we're worried about the hitters respecting the game when he has a perfect pitch to hit? It's a hitters job to hit and as Brian noted, all of their stats matter even the ones they get hurting you and Tony LaRussa's feelings.EnochRoot wrote: ↑Wed May 19, 2021 10:02 pmIf you have to ask that question, you’re not prepared for the answer. Yeah, bench a guy with .981 OPS a few games. It may cost a few wins and playoff position but we taught him a lesson.EnochRoot wrote: ↑Wed May 19, 2021 7:14 pmThat’s a strawman.A_B wrote: ↑Wed May 19, 2021 5:40 pmYeah, once the manager decides "I don't want to waste a pitchers arm on this crap" all bets are off. Nothing says waving the white flag like putting in a guy who might make the game take twice as long instead of regular pitchers who are recording outs at record rates.

Each team has like 13 pitchers now. How is not possible they can't just throw a guy in there to eat a couple innings?

Re: 2021 MLB Regular Season Thread
Good grief dude.
Freddie Freeman is up at the plate, up 10-0 and yeah, he’s OK with being sat down because a position player is on the mound, because the Cubs are waving the white flag.
You guys are making this harder than it needs to be.

Re: 2021 MLB Regular Season Thread
Throwing at batters, benching players, and trashing them to the media is much simpler than shrugging your shoulders at a player paid to swing the bat swinging the bat at a great pitch to hit, I guess.
Re: 2021 MLB Regular Season Thread
OK. The White Sox were up by 12 runs. The Twins inserted the position player to pitch the rest of the game. It’s a gentlemen agreement to get the game over with. Except for a White Sox player who chose to keep the game going by hitting a three run shot.
I already said that LaRussa messed up by not just benching Mercedes a few games for showing up the opposing team.

Re: 2021 MLB Regular Season Thread
Benching one of your best players for breaking an unwritten rule is so stupid
Re: 2021 MLB Regular Season Thread
You’re trying to correct a rule you perceive to be wrong by not punishing the player for breaking it. That’s shortsighted.
