Got a firmwide email from a managing partner about a former attorney at our firm passing away. We are a large firm, over 50 years old, so not too surprising and I've gotten several of these emails. Then I read it, the guy left the firm to volunteer in the Ukranian Army and he was killed in combat. Wife and two young kids. West Point grad who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, went to law school after 10+ years in the Army. Found an article that says he was killed serving in a mechanized unit conducting humanitarian missions. Just horrible. Takes a special kind of person to give up their career and family to volunteer in a war like that, and sucks that he paid the ultimate price for standing up and trying to help.

And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.

Former Pro Bowl TE Russ Francis dies in plane crash
Former Pro Bowl tight Russ Francis was killed in a plane crash in Lake Placid, New York, on Sunday, according to family members. Francis was 70.

Francis and Richard McSpadden, a former commander of the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, rolled hard to the left after takeoff from Lake Placid Airport before crashing, according to an NTSB spokesperson. It was not immediately clear whether Francis or McSpadden, 63, was flying the plane.

I’m guessing it wasn’t the former commander of the Thunderbirds who crashed the plane. My money is on the former NFL TE.

This is one of the funnier death-that-just-happened quotes I can imagine:

"My older brother Russ Francis was just killed in an airplane crash in Lake Placid, New York," Francis' brother Ed Francis wrote on Facebook on Sunday. "Flying was my brother's lifelong passion, and perhaps a fitting way for him to go. God speed to you my big brother!!"
