I think Ep1 put some people off, because it was peak "TENSION!!" for tension's sake... and I suspect there are folks that didn't quite understand what was going on there.

We're only 2 eps in, but I'm not quite understanding the criticism. I've mostly ignored that stuff due to not wanting spoilers AND I don't like negative thoughts being put in my head before i see something. But the one snippet I read... I'm not buying the negativity at this point.

The Bear Full Season Thought.
[+] spoiler
I think the "plot moving forward" wasn't accomplished through in kitchen storytelling. I think the last ep moved the plot forward emotionally by letting Carmy stand up for himself but then taking it away by Syd breaking down in the same ways that Joel McHale's dickhead character did to Carmy. There were signs all along, but holy fuck that was as real a depiction of anxiety after I had a somewhat anxious day. I have to think there's just one more season left, so that one might be pretty fast paced.

Also, I could listen to Thomas Keller talk about food & cooking forever.

Anyone watch Your Honor starring Bryan Cranston? Originally a Showtime series, but Netflix just picked it up. Holy fuck is it great. I blew through the first season in a couple of days. I usually switch shows after finishing a season, but the series finale was so good, I couldn't stop. Stayed up an hour later than I wanted as I had to finish the first episode of the second season. 3 eps into Season 2, and it is like watching a completely different show. Cranston is, as usual, off the charts amazing in this show. Seeing him play a completely altered person, with just a hint of the original man peeking through is next level. The plot went a bit too far at times, but it's great. And it features Esteemed Character Actress Margo Martindale!

We watched a NatGeo documentary on Hulu about an old guy in Shetland who befriended an otter. Called Billy and Molly. It was very cute, and deeper than I thought it would be. I enjoyed it. You guys with kids should definitely have the fam give it a look. It’s also on YouTube.

I got halfway through and had to quit. Tried watching again, and got bored. The guy just drones on for so damned long! First time, I ate an edible and the underwater scenes were phenomenal, but I got too high to focus on his endless blathering. I was going to give it another go, but Jon Lovett made a joke that made me realize why I couldn't keep watching. Don't remember what it was, but something like "it was great in the rare moments the octopus was in the show."

Tomorrow on Real Time is Kevin McCarthy, Ben Shapiro, and Bakari Sellers.

So we'll see how that goes. Bakari is awesome and the other two are trash scumbags.

The Bear
[+] spoiler
It's possible I'm just being stubborn, but I'm up through episode 5 (Children) and I'm finding the same level of enjoyment as season's past.

With that said, some thoughts:

* - The fact that it takes The Computer to state a bunch of really obvious shit to fix the finances is kind of frustrating. Opening a sixth day is some kind of revelation? Shorter wine pours, ditching the "charging plates." C'mon.

* - I think I speak for most everyone in stating I'm a fan of the Fak bros. And I think I can extend to this to a near universal liking of John Cena. But, 1) he's not a fucking Fak bro, c'mon and 2) there was just waaaaaay to much of these guys in this particular episode.

* - With that said, when Cena was asked to get a duck and he says "what kind, I saw a freshwater duck on his way there, let me grab a trash bag... That shit was hilarious.

* - Back to the top point.. Changing the menu every day, while I know it can be a thing in finer dining, is kind of annoying plot point. Especially for an unproven chef in a brand new restaurant. Just seems really unnecessary.

Bear ful season thoughts
[+] spoiler
Found myself bored and annoyed with the pacing and editing. So many scenes were overextended, and then on the other hand, flashing teases of the restuarant reviews was just annoying

The extended shots of cooking and chef talk was too much. A little is fine, but I can just watch the Food Network or one of the million chef shows on Netflix if I wanted more of that

The actors and characters are just amazingly done -- getting the perspectives and backgrounds makes you feel for almost all of them

When Joel McHale's dick character takes credit for his assholeness making Carmy an excellent chef, I was waiting for Carmy to respond there are other ways of making excellent chefs. Maybe the episode pointed that out by showing his nicer mentors. I guess McHale broke Carmy so much he couldn't respond. Maybe save a line or two from screaming at his cousin.

Speaking of the Cousin, his character has had one of the most dramatic shifts from hateable character to likeable character. I really liked the flashback scenes where he and his brother first meet and hire Liza

I'd rather eat food from the sandwich shop than the fancy restaurant

I miss Joel McHale on The Soup

Burned through it this weekend and I agree with your points.

I didn't need the labor scene.

I wanted more of the gritty, rough daily operations like what you saw when Liza showed up and was given coffee and a free meal. Beastie Boys was playing and you felt like you were a customer.

I hated how slow so much of it was. And I hated that Carmy became the person he hated the most.

McHale's character is well acted and his Don Draper schtick of "I don't think about you at all" was perfect. People like him get off on the power trip. Doesn't matter who the person is.

Very, very lame cliffhanger going into season 4.

More on The Bear with a question for the group:
[+] spoiler
Sydney is my least favorite character. She basically begs to be part of whatever Carmy does in season 1 then has spent the rest of time whining and complaining about everything. I'm curious what others think about the character.

I thought the first episode of season 3 was the best of the season. The flashbacks to what got him to this point with the same Nine Inch Nails song playing the entire episode made it more compelling

Also what you're saying is why she's probably leaving and going elsewhere, right? She keeps delaying on signing the ownership agreement and has that panic attack moment about it. (Unless I'm misremembering.)

I like her too and empathize with her. Carmy is giving her a wonderful opportunity and is making her a better chef, but he is so toxic and the environment is so toxic. I wouldn't want to commit to dealing with a screaming lunatic chef who pretty much ignores or overrules any ideas.

I'm not sure what they will do with her next season. It would be tough for the writers to lose having such a powerful character in the kitchen with Carmy. On the other hand, I could see them pushing a plot of Carmy driving away everyone who cares for him away and making him successful as a chef but miserable and all alone, with Everybody Hurts playing in the background (I do like the show's 90's music

Yeah, I’ll watch anything attached to Taika Waititi, but this looks really fun. I’ve been watching way too much dark stuff. The Boys is might reprieve of lightness, and that’s pretty damned dark.

BTW, season 4 of the Boys has been great, I’m halfway through. I totally get all the hatred from the Right, it’s so blatantly making fun of them this season. It’s fantastic. And a great cameo from Fudgey the Whale in what might be the darkest scene of any show ever.

I was late to season 1 of Hit Monkey..but when I tried it out, hammered through it. Season 2 is now available and interested to see where it goes. Voice work by Jason Sudeikis, Olivia Munn, and George Takei. Was not aware of the Marvel comic book, but like the animation and story. Right balance of story and humor.

How do you have evil Zack Morris locked in a basement and let him escape?

An underrated Michael Scott moment is when he mentions his grandmother sends him $50 every birthday and she's been sending him 8-9 checks a year, and instead of being concerned, he was just saving up the money for a big purchase.

Scavenger's Reign (Max, and I think Netflix) is a creative, beautiful, creepy, sometimes horrific (in a body-horror and "nature is horrifying" type of way) sci-fi animated show that probably isn't getting a second season but is worth checking out if any of the above sounds interesting.
