Was Jesse listenable? Dude bugs the crap out of me.

The Tig episode is one of their better ones. And I think I mentioned in the Movies thread that the interview with Kieran made me want to watch his movie. (I mistakenly said it was on Conan).

Scrolling back through episodes, Vince Vaughn was very good... And the live shows were really entertaining... Except the Boston one because the guest was weird.

I'm not a big fan of the non-celebrity episodes.
Eisenberg is tough to listen to, his character in A Real Pain is meant to be annoying, and it’s actually a much toned down version of his actual personality.

If you are going to listen to one episode of Smartless, make it it the Cloony episode. His stories about fucking with Richard Kind when they were roommates is hilarious.

I also like it when one of their close friends winds up on the show. Jennifer Anniston and Justin Theroux are good examples.

Do they actually interview people now? Last time I was listening they spend all the time kissing the guest’s ass and ask almost nothing.

They aren't the best interviewers, for sure. I just like their interactions and then bringing folks into their little world.

They've gotten better, though. When they first started, you could tell they were doing very little prep. By it's nature 2 of the 3 aren't even sure who the guest is going to be. Can make it clunky if the one "in the know" isn't having a good day.

Yeah, I think it’s an attempt at hanging out with a guest more than an interview, which is why it works better with a guest they are friends with, or at least in the same sphere. If it’s an intellectual, politician or musician, they aren’t confident or able to connect sometimes. More than anything, it’s an excuse for them to brutally make fun of each other.

Really odd timing as I'm going through the podcast "60 Songs That Explain the 90s", and the last one I listened this week to was about "Juicy" where the host talked about her a lot.
One of my favorite shows ever (the podcast in general).
Today was the first day I've ever heard Common People by Pulp. I kept thinking the entire episode that once I heard the song at the end, it would be one of those "oh, that's the name of that song" type situations, but nope. Completely unrecognizable.

Wouldn’t have recognized the song, but I know I’ve seen the video before. I feel like it was posted here many years ago. Rass?

ETA: Tom and Sancarlos discussed Pulp and I probably googled them because I hadn’t heard of them. And it was back in August, but I can’t remember that far back.

I feel like I confuse Pulp and Blur, as two four-letter Britpop bands with “U”s in their name and are fronted by wankers.

The main difference is the songs I like most are usually Pulp and the ones I like least are usually Blur.

I listened to the Selena episode on Wednesday on my way home from happy hour and turns out that day was the 30th anniversary of her last concert ever which was at the Astrodome.

I'm enjoying the podcast Confusing Heap of Facts from American military historians. Johnnie would have insider knowledge obviously but I've found it fascinating as they talk about American military setup as well as other countries. What's a regiment? Division? Brigade? Corps?

The Amy Poehler podcast is a delightful escape. She interviews friends, but before the actual interview, she talks to folks close to that person to "talk nice about them behind their back." Really just a nice 30-40 minutes with Amy and whoever.

The other one is Gone South is out with a bunch of episodes. This was one that went deep on the Dixie Mafia. Now he is doing one-off investigative reporting and I'm 3 episodes in and it's EXCELLENT. This guy is a great reporter and story-teller.

Reading what I wrote about Amy ... She's not interviewing randos... Tina Fey, Martin Short, Rashida Jones and Katherine Hahn so far.

(I don't dislike Short, but, man... I don't need to hear him interviewed on any more podcasts.)

What I love most about Daniel Tosh’s podcast is that they’re all pretty much randos. The most famous one is someone rass probably adores.

Tosh is so, so talented at interviewing. Comes across as genuinely interested in people he's talking to. Manages to call people on their weirdness without being an asshole. Really funny too.

You’re exactly right. He will call them out not in a “gotcha” way, but more of a “ok explain this to me you weirdo because I’m genuinely interested” way.

Which episode(s) did you listen to? I think it might be a situation where she's still finding her groove. But I'm a total mark for her and Tina, so I probably have a skewed opinion/take.

The first one. The ridiculous amount of ads at the beginning didn't help things, but it didn't grab me the way I thought it would. I may give it another shot. Maybe my expectations were too high. I'm definitely a mark for Poehler and Fey as well.
